Ever go into a room and immediately feel yucky, like the air became dense, your mind muzzy, or your mood plummeted for no reason? You’re not making it up.
Some people think spaces build up negative energy over time, the type that does so subtly, bringing your mood down or transforming your once-cozy home into an icky place.
The good news? There’s an oddly easy way to rid your space of and even eliminate bad energy, and you just need to use a glass of water and common pantry supplies.

Spirit and Science of the Water Test
While this seems plucked straight from the mystic’s playbook, the “glass of water” test does have an old precedent. To explain it in more detail, the premise behind the test is this: water absorbs and reflects the energy it comes into contact with.
Pair it with other cleansers, like salt, vinegar, and sage oil, and you’ve got yourself a natural detector for negative energy you can’t see.
Sage, specifically, takes center stage here. Used for thousands of years in Greek, Roman, and Egyptian cultures for protective and medicinal properties, this savory spice has been validated by modern studies to confirm some of the claims of sage’s benefits towards health.
It is connected to the elevation of mood, the alleviation of stress, and the promotion of antioxidants to combat oxidative injury. In short, it’s not just tales by the fire. Sage actually does make individuals feel better.
How the “Sage Room Cleanse” Works
If you have ever felt peculiarly stressed, anxious, or irritable indoors, you may want to give this ritual a try. It takes little time and requires fewer than five minutes of preparation.
You’ll need:
- 2 tablespoons vinegar
- 2-3 tablespoons sea salt
- 2-3 cups of water
- 4 drops of white sage oil
Instructions:
- Add the sea salt to an empty glass or container.
- Add water to the full glass, and lastly, the sage oil and the vinegar. (No longer mix or stir.)
- Leave the glass in an inconspicuous position in the room, ideally a corner.
- Let it sit for 24 hours undisturbed and uncovered.
- When the time’s expired, check the mixture.
- If it looks just the same, congratulations, your space is cleared energetically.
But once the color or texture of the liquid has become different, the theory professes that it absorbed negative energy.
Then you get rid of it outside, ideally ten feet or so from your living area, by dumping it onto the ground. You understand, you want nature to take this energy and transform it into something neutral or even good.
Whatever you do, you don’t dump it down the drain; that just gets the negative energy back in.
Repeat Until Clear
If the liquid is new, fill the glass and repeat the procedure in the same room for 24 hours. Certain rooms require multiple rotations, particularly those that haven’t been cleansed in quite some time.
To go all-in, try a full-house cleanse. Keep one glass in every room, check every day, and repeat the ritual only where you observe symptoms of energy build-up. After a couple of days, your house may be quieter and seem fresher.
Fresh Start for Your Space
Whether you hold energy or see this as just an intention-setting ceremony, there is something fundamentally centering to it.
You are forced to dial it back, pay attention to where you are, and consciously recharge your space, and it feels like you are hitting the reset button on your space and your mind.
So if your space has felt “off” lately, heavy, tight, or emotionally overwhelming, grab yourself a glass, some of the sea salt, and a few drips of the sage oil. After 24 hours, you’ll be amazed at what little water does reveal.
